An Overview of Ghana's Senior High School Examinations

The West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) is a pivotal standardized test for students in Ghana, serving as a key academic milestone. Administered by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the WASSCE is the final assessment for Senior High School (SHS) students and determines their eligibility for tertiary education and employment opportunities. It is a rigorous examination that evaluates a student's knowledge and skills across a range of subjects.

The WASSCE is not only a national examination but also a regional one, with other English-speaking West African countries like Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and The Gambia also participating. In Ghana, the examination is typically conducted for final-year students in May and June. The results are highly significant as they form the primary basis for university and college admissions both domestically and internationally.

Subject Structure and Grading

The WASSCE curriculum is divided into core and elective subjects. All students are required to take four core subjects:

  • English Language

  • Mathematics (Core)

  • Integrated Science

  • Social Studies

In addition to the core subjects, students are expected to choose three to four elective subjects based on their academic program or career aspirations. These programs include General Arts, General Science, Business, Technical, and Vocational, with a wide variety of subjects available within each.

The grading system for the WASSCE ranges from A1 to F9, with A1 being the highest grade and F9 being a failure. The grades are as follows:

  • A1: Excellent (75-100%)

  • B2: Very Good (70-74%)

  • B3: Good (65-69%)

  • C4: Credit (60-64%)

  • C5: Credit (55-59%)

  • C6: Credit (50-54%)

  • D7: Pass (45-49%)

  • E8: Pass (40-44%)

  • F9: Fail (0-39%)

A credit grade (C6 or better) is generally the minimum requirement for admission into most tertiary institutions in Ghana, particularly for the core subjects.

Significance for Tertiary Education

The WASSCE is the single most important factor for students aspiring to pursue higher education. Universities and other institutions use the WASSCE results to select qualified candidates for their programs. Students who do not meet the minimum requirements for their desired programs often have the option to retake the exams as private candidates to improve their grades. The entire process, from the release of results to the purchase of admission forms, is a crucial period for students as they navigate the transition from secondary to tertiary education.
