Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia: Economist and Politician

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's career is defined by his blend of economic expertise and political leadership. As an economist, he has held significant roles in both academia and the financial sector, which he has then applied to his political positions.

Background and Early Career

Born in Tamale, Dr. Bawumia holds degrees in economics from the University of Buckingham, Oxford University, and Simon Fraser University, where he earned his Ph.D. Before entering politics, he was an Assistant Professor of Economics at Baylor University in Texas and later served as the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana from 2006 to 2009. His work at the Bank of Ghana was notable, as he was involved in key initiatives such as the redenomination of the cedi and the introduction of the e-zwich platform.

Rise in Politics

Dr. Bawumia was selected as the running mate for Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections, a partnership that, while initially unsuccessful, cemented his place in the NPP's leadership. In 2016, the ticket finally won, and he was sworn in as the Vice President of Ghana in January 2017. He served in this role until 2025.

Key Focus as Vice President

As Vice President, Dr. Bawumia was appointed to head the government's Economic Management Team. He has been a strong advocate for digital innovation and has spearheaded several initiatives aimed at digitizing Ghana's economy and public services. Key projects under his leadership include the implementation of the Ghana Card, a national biometric identification system, and the digital address system. He has consistently championed a move toward a "paperless" and more technologically integrated society.

In November 2023, Dr. Bawumia was elected as the NPP's presidential candidate for the 2024 general election. His campaign highlighted his accomplishments as Vice President, particularly his push for digitalization.
